What happens when you flush cloth rags down the toilet?
You can probably guess the answer to the question in the title ... nothing good! So, don't flush rags or towels. For that matter, don't flush paper towels, and only use single-ply toilet paper. This is especially because modern toilets use less water, and have less flushing power - at both the business end and down the line.
Why do we keep finding construction trash in sewer pipes??
We at Omni Eye see all kinds of items that don't belong in sewer pipes. But the most perplexing is construction trash: plastic caps, aluminum flashing, nuts, bolts, you name it! Please folks, plug the hole in the toilet inlet while construction is taking place. We get it, this is all happening at a fast pace and being neat and tidy isn't always possible. But when someone purchases a new home, they don't (and shouldn't!) expect there to be problems with their pipes. So, please be careful with open sewer pipes. Thank you!

Are shared vacuum sewer systems a good thing?
In this video, Omni Eye Inc inspects a home that has a shared vacuum sewer system. Listen in as our expert technician describes the system to the homeowners. When residential areas transition from septic systems to shared vacuum sewer systems, several key changes occur:
- Centralized Collection: Instead of individual septic tanks, households connect to a central vacuum sewer system. This centralized collection point eliminates the need for individual tank maintenance and reduces the risk of groundwater contamination.
- Vacuum Stations: Vacuum stations, strategically located throughout the community, create negative pressure within the sewer lines, enabling the transport of sewage to the treatment facility. These stations are equipped with vacuum pumps and collection chambers to handle the waste efficiently.
- Efficient Transport: Waste flows through small-diameter pipes under vacuum pressure, allowing sewage to travel even in areas with minimal slope. This efficient transport method reduces the need for extensive excavation and trenching during installation.
- Reduced Environmental Impact: Shared vacuum sewer systems minimize the risk of leaks and overflows, protecting the surrounding environment from pollution. Additionally, centralized treatment facilities can incorporate advanced technologies for more effective wastewater treatment.
- Community Benefits: Residents benefit from reliable sewage disposal without the hassle of septic tank maintenance. Shared systems also allow for easier monitoring and maintenance by utility operators, ensuring optimal system performance and longevity. Overall, the transition from septic systems to shared vacuum sewer systems in residential areas offers improved efficiency, environmental protection, and convenience for homeowners.
We just had these sewer pipes fixed, so what's the problem?

Watch out for the white pipe in your backyard!
So, what is that white pipe sticking up out of the ground in your backyard? Well, it's a sewer cleanout! It allows access to sewer pipes for cleaning or inspecting from down the line. If there's a problem inside the house that you can't get to or visualize from a stack, going up the line is a great option. But be careful! That white pipe is made of PVC, which if you watch our videos you know means it's somewhat fragile. Don't run it over with your mower, don't kick it, just leave it alone. A broken pipe can mean costly excavation and repairs!

If they're not so good, that's even better to know! We mark and map out your system so you know what you have and where it's located. If you have clay pipe in your yard, you'll want to know where it is before landscaping work is done. Talk about a potentially expensive mishap!

It’s the beginning of the end (for Orangeburg)
In this latest chapter of our ongoing saga with Orangeburg pipe, we once again encounter the now-obsolete pipe material. Once an innovative solution to a materials shortage in WWII, it never was very reliable. In some applications, it has outlasted its 40-50 year expected lifespan. You can clearly see in this video how the deterioration begins, and why it’s good to know whether you have Orangeburg in service at your residence.
PVC is great for sewer drains, but not always!
Having newer PVC pipe for your drain and sewer lines doesn’t guarantee that it’s not the problem when it comes to recurrent backups. As you’ll see in this video, one of the weaknesses of PVC is the fact that it’s comparatively weak!

Orangeburg pipe is expiring across the country. Here's what you need to know.
We've been seeing more and more Orangeburg pipe in our inspections. Its reputation then became one of premature failure and was eventually banned from use in international building codes in the early '70s.
Watch this video to see what it looks like when Orangeburg fails.

The same goes for corroded cast iron pipes that tend to grab onto paper, causing it to gather into hardened "paper logs."
